AESTHETICS IN CRITICAL SPACES: EXPLORING ETHICAL DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR REFUGEE CAMPS
SCHWÄBISCH GMÜND UNIVERSITY OF DESIGN
WORKSHOP 2016
During the 'Laborwoche' at the University of Design Schwäbisch Gmünd, where interdisciplinary approaches to design are fostered, the Palestinian refugee camp Shatila in Beirut, Lebanon, served as the focal point of interventions. Delving into the profound challenges faced by residents in this socio-critical setting, the project aimed to address pressing ethical concerns and improve human conditions.
Through a deep analysis of space scarcity and its socio-economic implications, a range of innovative ideas emerged: from knowledge-generation apps to children's furniture, from guidance systems to initiatives for recycling plastic waste. Each design proposal sought not only to enhance the physical environment but also to uphold the dignity and well-being of the individuals living in the camp.
